The Ahmed Makarfi-led faction in a statement, Tuesday, threatened Ali Sheriff and his loyalists with jail terms if he continues to parade himself as the leader of the party. Ijaw-History-of-Southern-Nigeria A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE IJAWS OF SOUTHERN NIGERIA Dave Asei According to Ozodi Thomas Osuji, the Ijaw did not develop the art of writing and, therefore, did not leave written records of their history. In so far that they have written history it is post English colonization of Ijaw land. The English established their claim over what is now called Nigeria in the nineteenth century and thereafter Christian missionaries descended on Southern Nigeria and taught the natives how to read and write. By the mid twentieth century the natives were sufficiently proficient in the English language that some of them began to write down on paper what they believed were their histories. In the nature of things what they wrote regarding their contemporary history is probably more accurate than what they made up as their ancient history. Human memory does not remember events that took place over thousands of years unless they were written down on paper. I
